The Department of Geography at the Hong Kong Baptist University, the Asian Energy Studies Centre (AESC) proudly hosted the "Junior Energy Scientists" training program at the Fairview Park Alliance Church in collaboration with the Y.M.C.A. Wong Chun Fai Community Centre. This event marked our first
partnership with the community center, establishing a new energy hub dedicated to fostering low-carbon education among children.
The training programme consisted of 3 workshops. During the first workshop, participants learned about the principles of solar energy and its applications in daily life. They explored solar bus stations, solar-powered schools, and how solar panels can power household appliances. The children also had an exciting hands-on experience to assemble their own solar cars.
In the second session, we delved into weather and energy through a DIY weather station. Participants discovered factors affecting indoor and outdoor temperatures, such as insulation and ventilation. They learned how weather influences energy consumption and solar power generation. The highlight of this session was building their own weather station to observe and measure local weather conditions!
The final workshop focused on energy and temperature using infrared cameras. Participants explored the church and surrounding environment to identify heat sources like air conditioners and computers. They discussed the importance of temperature data and learned about the optimal placement of solar panels to maximize energy efficiency.
We are thrilled to have engaged young minds in these interactive sessions, promoting a sustainable future through education!
